I have an enduring fascination with the tower blocks on the Chapel Street Estate in Brierley Hill. They act as a focal point as I traverse the numerous bonks* of the Black Country, guiding me safely towards home. Who needs a map or compass when you can just gaze at the horizon and aim your trusty chariot towards the sea of twinkling lights in the sky. Window gazing not star gazing.
Many may disagree, but I find the tower blocks photogenic. Then again I'm a photographer who finds beauty in the concrete, urban, weed-filled, paint-chipped, corners of our towns and cities. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, well this beholder bathes in the beauty of the (sometimes) brutal, but definitely majestic!
So Sunday I went off to worship at the Chapel (St Estate) with another dérive (aimless wander) to discover anew.
There's a great post about the Chapel Street Estate on local historian Simon Briercliffe's website.
